An interview with Cate Parke's hero Richard in her new book Richard Berkely's Bride

I'm thrilled to welcome Cate Parke this evening. I have interviewed the hero in her spectacular book, Richard Berkeley's Bride. Let's sit back and poke and prod to find out all about him...shall we?

Cate, could you introduce your hero before I begin the questions?

Thanks so much for agreeing to speak to the hero of my story today. I must tell you, Richard was reluctant to appear here. (He’s a man of the eighteenth century, you know. He finds the twenty-first century a bit daunting.)

Can you tell us your name and how you first met your writer?
My given name is Richard William Thomas Berkeley. Cate was a guest at Lord Edward Campbell’s the evening Lord Edward and my father proposed Lord Edward’s lovely daughter, Alexandra, as my future wife. She sat in the shadows of the room so it was difficult to see her. I didn’t actually meet her until later that evening, at supper.
Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book?
No, Cate surprised me. I believe I led an interesting life, but I wouldn’t have believed someone in the twenty-firstt century would have thought so.
What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?
I loved Cate’s description of the scene where I would have beaten Lord Thomas Graham within an inch of his life. The vicious fop had it coming to him. Cate had the sheriff stop me before the man bore little more than mussed clothing. I disliked him from the first time I set my eyes on him. Doubtless, he felt the same about me. We never spoke to one another except to trade insults.
Did you have a hard time convincing your author to write any particular scenes for you?
Cate wasn’t eager to write the scenes between my wife and me—in the bedroom, if you catch my meaning.
Do you infiltrate your writer’s dreams?
No—the only person who manages that feat is my wife. Cate and Alexandra have an uncanny relationship. Cate seems to read her mind. Alternatively, Cate is forced to ask me about myself, or watch the things I do and try to understand my actions and activities. With Alexandra, Cate almost seems to have always known her. I find myself at a loss to explain it.
What do you like to do when you are not being actively read somewhere?
Like most gentlemen, I enjoy my leisure hours. I have a sawmill and enjoy planning improvements to it. I was blessed to find the finest land steward in South Carolina and perhaps anywhere in the American colonies. The man has—had, that is, a genius for designing engineering marvels. I breed Arabian horses and hope to have a large herd of them one day, as fine as the one from whose stock my horses came, the Harrisons of Virginia.
Are you happy with the genre your writer has placed you in?
Yes, for the most part, though I might have chosen an action adventure for myself. My wife has a secret passion for historical romances. She reads the ones her aunt sends her from cover to cover. I’ve a feeling she rather likes being the heroine of her very own romance.
Do you like the way the book ended?
Yes, but the book didn’t actually end if, once again, you catch my meaning. Our story continues in Cate’s next book, Dreams Within Dreams.
What is your least favorite characteristic your writer has attributed to you?
It is the scene where I disgrace myself with my wife. You see, she’s the granddaughter of two dukes and believed she had fallen out of love with me, especially after our son was born. I failed to acquit myself well. I admit it.
Do have any secret aspirations that your author doesn’t know about?
Yes. Cate doesn’t know that I would like to design a ceiling fan able to turn without means of a servant.
What do you do for a living?
I must beg your pardon, but I don’t labor at anything. I’m a gentleman. After completing my years at Oxford, I trained as a lawyer at London’s Inner Temple. I was fortunate. Most Americans were admitted only to the Middle Temple. It was Lord Edward who assured I was provided with the best education. After I returned to Charlestowne, Lord Edward took me into his successful business. I perform legal service for him whenever he requires them. I also operate a successful lumber mill. My plantation, Oakhurst, requires much of my time. It is successful, as am I. By means of canny investments, I’ve already acquired a small fortune. I shall make a much larger one, I can assure you.
What is your greatest fear?
In my soul, I most fear losing my beautiful wife.
What do you wear when you go to sleep?
You surprise me madam. I wear nothing at all.
What is your most prized possession?
My wife.
Did you have a pet as a child?
I have a pet now. His name is Jack. He has a longer name, but Jack suffices. He’s a St. John’s Water Dog. He is the forerunner of the dog you call a Labrador Retriever. My wife’s grandfather sent her a Scottish terrier pup. She named him Gilleasbuig after a famous ancestor of hers. You’ll pardon me for believing the pup will never grow to such heroic proportions as his namesake—though I would never say these words to my wife. (There you have one of my secrets!)
What do you find most appealing in men/women?
In men it would be their ability to argue their positions with sound logic. I enjoy engaging in strong arguments with my friends. In women, it is their poise, their gentility, their beauty, their ability wear the clothing of our day with aplomb. You must understand, that society of our day does not expect women to be well-informed and well educated. I believe this is a mistake. I always have.
What do you find most unappealing in men/women?
I am repelled by most women’s stupidity. As I mentioned, most men and women believe education to be wasted on young girls. I believe they are wrong. Certainly, my wife hasn’t fallen prey to this ignorant conviction, and for that I am eternally grateful.
What do you like most about where you live?
Oakhurst? The house. It’s where I live with my wife. She has made it a home. It is graceful and elegant, as warm as anyplace could be in the winter—and as cool as anyplace could be during our long hot, humid summers.
What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy Sunday?
Even on rainy Sundays we rise early, breakfast with our houseguests, attend services at St. James Goose Creek Church of England, and return home for one of Miss Ruth’s magnificent dinners. Miss Ruth is our cook. Lord Edward employed her and her husband when he first built the plantation. My brother and I often ride during the afternoon. By sundown, our guests have departed. I rarely waste the hours of my day. I spend the evenings with my beautiful bride.
What is your vivid memory of your mother and father?
One of the things I found most engaging about my parents was their attachment to one another. My mother never failed to flirt with my father and he with her. Perhaps I was aware of it because I’m a man. Girls have flirted with me almost since I was breeched. My parents never spoke about it to me but I was aware of them, you may be sure. My mother’s face lit up in a certain way when my father entered a room. They never failed to touch one another and their eyes rarely left each other while they were together. Now and again, one of them would make an innocuous comment to the other evoking private smiles and certain little glances. It’s how I’d hoped the marriage I shared with my future wife would be. I’m a fortunate man. Alexandra and I share such a bond.
What is your least favorite word?
I believe it must be the four letter epithet most of us dislike most. I use it now and again. Most men do. I confess, though, I still don’t like it.
What turns you on?
I confess, I’m unfamiliar with this term. From the way you ask it, however, I presume you mean that which I find titillating. If that is the case, I find my wife’s brisk response to my lovemaking to be my greatest…turn on. She’s loving and, most of all, creative in her response to me.
What turns you off?
If, from your previous question, you ask what I find most off-putting, it must certainly be a woman’s grasping for more than are her just deserts. While I sympathize with women’s positions, I find such behavior amongst them to be unladylike…distasteful. They are not the women to whom I would have offered my hand in marriage.
What sound or noise do you love?
Ah-h, you ask such easy questions. It must be the soft noises my wife makes when she is well-sated from lovemaking.
What other profession would you like to try?
Not only would I like to try it, I shall go to war on behalf of my country. I cannot support England’s position in the American colonies.
What is your most favorite memory?
On the day were wed, the doors from the narthex opened and my wife stood with her hand on her father’s arm. She was a shimmer of brocaded cloth of silver, her bodice cut below her breasts. A stiff starched lace inset scarcely covered their rosy tips. Her shoulders were bare as well as a large part of her bosom. A long train trailed behind her. The skirt of her gown opened below her tiny waist to display the beauty of her ruffled petticoat. Her mother’s pearls dangled in her ears. High-heeled slippers, covered in the same brocade as her gown, bore froths of stiff pale blue ribbons tied in bows sewn on each one. They peeped from beneath her gown with each step she took toward him. She wore a crown of winter herbs and hothouse flowers on her head. A lace veil covered her long red curls. She’d told me it was a gift from her Grandmother Wessex. I suspected the heirloom was priceless. She was a vision of loveliness. I shall never forget it as long as I live. I couldn’t imagine I could be more in love with her than I was that day. I must confess how very wrong I was.

All of Me, a McRaidy Son is a wonderful and emotionally gripping novel that I had a tough time putting down. What struck me the most was the very realistic storyline…

Hot Summer Romance Giveaway Hop from July 18 - 21! Win a free e-book from me and much more!

Ahhh, Love at First Sight.
Is it real or is it a perception?

We could scientifically break it down and at the end, decide the logics don’t fit our scenario, but let’s explore my Love at First sight encounter.

Think about love, it’s an intimacy of your soul. The person you are in love with make you feel a physical reaction. Maybe its excitement or sensuality or even a twisting of your nerves because you were unprepared to have such a visceral response.

I don’t know if it was love at first sight but my eyes locked gazes with a man, the one I’m utterly devoted to, and that experience we all read about happened to me. The sounds of the cold fall day and the other people talking faded into a background hum. His eyes, they were alive with personality. I shook his hand and my body physically responded. I knew that the touch of his skin on mine was something I’d never forget.

All the general things we experience with an immediate attraction were there. He was gorgeous, well built, stunning smile, smooth voice and a perfect hair cut but his eyes….I couldn’t stop staring. There was almost a centrifugal force pushing me toward him and I had no control.

We had our first “interlude” that very night and it was perfect. No nervousness, not a bit of self-consciousness, and it was all about us…several times…oh my!

He never left my mind the days after. What was supposed to be just a good time, didn’t end. I wanted him with my heart like no other. Almost four years later, I still have the same response to him and I swear there is no more masculine, handsome man out there. He spoils me, brings me the sweetest little gifts, tells me how beautiful and sexy I am and I love it and him!

My logical conclusion is it may be gripping attraction that grows to a profound love.
My romantic heart’s conclusion, “Oh yeah baby, just like that!”

What about you? Love at First sight or is there a logic to it? Share, tell me. I’m dying to know!

Now for some more fun stuff! Leave a comment and your email addy and I’ll put you in my own drawing for an e-book of your choice. You can browse through my “My Books” tab and decide.

Also, click here, and check out all the authors talking about romance and comment on their blogs for a chance to win a gift from them.

Lastly, you’ll want to comment on as many blogs as you can for a random drawing for one of the grand prizes… #1 is a Kindle Fire. #2 is a $50 Amazon.com gift certificate.

Review of One Bad Day by Edie Hart

One Bad Day by Edie Hart is a fun little novella. There was chemistry between the hero and heroine but the real fun was the culmination of the suspense. The title of the book, One Bad Day nailed the story line right on the nose! I admit a cringed a couple of times since a few things weren't as believable or realistic as I’d like. The good part about Ms. Hart’s writing is, those couple of incidents didn't throw me out of the story. I enjoyed how the suspense was layered throughout the story and it brought out the…Well who is it?? Ms. Hart has a definite talent for suspense.

I’d also like to comment on the cover. It was hot and really displayed the story. The artist truly captured the book.

Overall, I believe Ms. Hart’s debut book, One Bad Day to be a well-crafted story and I look forward to watching Edie Hart continue to provide readers with more books.

My walk to being a published author.

Hmm. Most times that's the only response I have to various situations. I am the type of person who fundamentally believes that there isn't a lot I can do to stop something that is inevitable or change the past by dwelling on it. I will caveat that by saying there are situations that compel me to speak up. I did that this week and continued to ponder my thoughts on being an author.

In doing so, I refreshed my mind with re-reading a few blogs, stopping by some outstanding authors sites, and thought about my own road trip as an author. Interestingly enough, I'm not alone in my experiences.

  • Writing a book is only part of the journey. It's fulfilling but you have to ask yourself, am I satisfied in my soul or do I want more for this creation.
  • On to publishing. Do you find an agent first or do you submit to a publisher on your own? I opted for direct submission to a publisher. I write spicy romance but many of my stories are not "in the box" so to speak. My version of HEA or HFN tends to be a bit different in some manuscripts. But, my stories are character driven and they decide. What am to do?? LOL
  • Once the prospective publisher is chosen, you read every detail of their submission guidelines and write the infamous "Synopsis". Authors know what this important summary is and for readers, it is the heart of the entire book. Nothing is held back and every hook is given away. Now the balancing act begins. Most houses don't want you to submit the same manuscript to them and half a dozen others. Their reasoning is justifiable. They take the time to review your work and if they offer a contract, they don't want to be bounced around while the author waits around for a different offer. This process can take a few weeks to months so what do you do?
  • Write another book while you wait. Once you get a contract, you will want to have more to offer as time goes.
  • Shazam! You get an offer to publish your book! This is one of the best feelings I've had as an author. It is a gold star moment! You read through the contract and sign it. If you use a pseudonym like I do, you make sure that's the name you want to use. Authors have various reasons for a pen name. Mine is because of the type of work I do in my job as well as the genre of my books. I have eroticism in my books and felt that a separation of sorts would be best for my situation. My chosen pseudo is a derivative of my name and I like it.
  • Once your release date is set, it becomes difficult to focus back on writing a new story but I did. Then I got the cover. Holy crap! It was perfect! I was in love. LOL
  • Next come the edits. This was an eye opening moment for me. I expected a few changes but the colored lines and words of correction nearly catapulted me into a seizure. Did I really dangle participles that much? I worked through them and as I got to the end of the book, a small note from my editor sent a rush of goosebumps over my skin. She loved my book and brought her to tears. Dang! It was awesome.
  • The book gets published and somewhere inside I realized I was in an abyss. I had no idea how to know if my book sold, if it did, how many and how did that equate to my royalties. Since I get my check each quarter, I wouldn't see anything for six months. Once quarter one is done, all the proceeds are sent to my publisher who then pays me at the end of the second quarter.During the mean time, I read all my reviews, good and bad. Watched the various rankings at the different sales outlets and I still wasn't quite sure. I expected that my friends and family would swarm all over my book but as supportive as they were, they didn't clean the electronic shelves. I've found that is frequent for a good deal of authors and I'm okay with it. Authors write what they know, and I write books with sex in them. Two plus two equals four. LOL
  • Promoting myself was tough. Bragging without being a nuisance is a careful line. It's a balance of getting your book out there but still giving something back. Whether a free book or a heartfelt blog. Something. I run into from promoting authors that by now is their lack of effort in giving me something in return for my interest so I just hit delete when I see their post on a loop. There are others that give me a wonderful tease and I pop to their site to check out their book as well as see what they have to say.I buy from those that peaked my interest with their blurb, cover art and what they blogged about. Its a combination for me to spend my money as a reader. I've found those authors who gave back to me usually had awesome books.
  • Then, the first check finally arrived. I was less interested in the dollar amount as I was in the sales report. I didn't sell enough to quit my day job but I wasn't disappointed. Let me break out here for a moment. The one thing I quickly realized was the investment my publisher had made in me at this point. I didn't pay for the professional edits, beautiful cover or any of the electronic formatting. All those lovely people received a share of the proceeds with me and I knew it was far less a cut than I received. It wasn't until much later that I actually understood that a good cover is several hundreds of dollars not including paying for the model on the cover as well as the value of the edits. The formatting isn't cheap either. All total, my publisher easily invested $1,500-$2,000 dollars in me for one book. I'll admit, I felt anxious. Would I be worth the investment?
  • Over time, I released several more books and am still happy with my house. I love that phrase, "my house". I did dabble with another publisher but I didn't click with their style and I've also received emails from others asking me to submit. I contemplate it but when I look at their site, or their authors blogs, I opt against it. I value the professionalism and relationship with my publisher.
  • To conclude my perception of the road of being an author, I can summarize a few things. It's the a long walk, not a sprint for building readership. Sales ebb and flow but I still have my day job. I've met some truly outstanding individuals who are authors with spectacular books.I appreciate the investment "my house" makes in me. My long walk is going well and so is that of many of my author friends. I wish them well and they do me also. It's a wonderful community to be involved with.Oh and I still get lots of edits but I'm getting better...so my editor say anyway!
Lots of Love

We've made it easy because we Love our Readers!

Welcome to my Valentine's blog today!

I took a bit of time to think about my favorite thing about Valentine’s Day and the romance that is usually associated with it. There were the long ago memories of being a kid and waiting for the teacher to let us dive into the bags or boxes of small valentine cards. Those that attached candy were the best. Of course, there was the secret hope that one of the cute boys had written a secret message professing love. It never happened that way, I mean after all, we were nine.

As I aged, the romantic expectations faded and it became more of a reminder to express my affection to my romantic partner. UNTIL Stud man! He takes romance very seriously. I am blessed with a variety of candies, a wonderful card with a sweet message scrawled inside and a delicious meal. As I plan my display of affection this year, it reminded me of a past Valentine’s Day I wanted to share with you. I didn’t come across very well with my drama queen moment but I’ve improved since then.

It was the Saturday before Valentine’s day, I was overly tired and feeling defeated that I gained a few pounds over winter and it was still too cold to do much outside. Disgusted and pouting I plopped in the middle of the couch and focused on playing battleship on the Xbox. Whining to my man as he watched about us eating too much red meat, I want to become a vegetarian and if I had a bicycle all my problems would be solved.

My Stud teased me a little, kept giving me a kiss or squeeze and patiently tolerated my snippy comments, crappy attitude, and general bad behavior. As I’m regaling him about the unfairness placed on women’s weight, he grabbed the car keys and casually stated he was going for a haircut. I nearly hissed at him over abandoning me in my time of need.

Now keep in mind he goes every week to the same barber and gets a haircut. He is picky about his hair and always has been. It’s one of my favorite things about him. A haircut shouldn’t have come as any surprise to me but at that moment, the fact that he was going for a haircut and I was moody without a bicycle sent me over the top and into self-pity. (I really should have slept in that morning; it had been a long week with a ton of overtime) I got teary eyed, left the living room, and sniffled my way to the bathroom to sulk.

I finished with my pout about a minute later and decided I really needed a nap. With my tail between my legs, I slinked out of the bathroom. I glanced around and then I saw the front door wide open and no one in sight. I stomped to the door and shoved it shut. I stomped to the couch and plopped myself down again all the while loudly giving my opinion of my Studs manners since he left the door open.

Not a minute later, Woosh the door opened and in a loud racket, my gorgeous loving man set my brand new bicycle down and smiled, "Happy Valentine’s Day Baby!"

I sobbed and hugged him while I apologized for being such a hag. He explained he knew I wanted a bike and bought it the night before. He hid it at the neighbors to wait for Valentine’s Day but decided I needed it today. I adore him for that and I took a ride, then a nap and was much more pleasant for the rest of the weekend.

The moral to my little recitation is this...even though it isn't brand new love, romance comes in all sorts of ways. To some a bicycle for Valentine’s Day may not be the perfect romantic gift but my man knew it was for me. That is what romance is all about, knowing what makes your partner tingle. The important thing for us to remember is it goes both ways. I think our partners like a little attention too.

Everyone enjoy their Valentine’s Day and a romantic read!

Lots of Love
Em

Santa

When I was around the age of deciding my thoughts about the realism of Santa I remember seeing a look of concern in my father's gaze. As I explained to he and my mother that the other kids at school said Santa and the north-pole were just a myth, they listened but were very quick to quash those "silly notions".
I was still somewhat unsure but as Christmas approached I pondered the question, "if I didn't believe in Santa, would that affect my gift haul?"
As always, Christmas Eve came, all the family arrived and as usual, my dad disappeared for the night. Since it had always been the case that he had to work, I didn't question it. In fact I couldn't remember a time when he didn't have to haul a run (semi truck) on the night before Christmas.
While we unwrapped our gifts, I slipped into my bedroom for a minute to get my moms gift I'd made for her. My bedroom was dark but the curtains were still open. I glanced out into the back yard and against the white snow glowing from the moon, Santa stepped out of our travel trailer!
Ohhhhh my dad was going to be so mad! No one was allowed in there without his supervision!
I wanted to warn the jolly man but just as I tugged on my window, he stopped and looked at me. His head bowed for a moment and felt utter guilt at catching him. He slowly walked toward me and I tingled in anticipation.
I finally got my window open and he stood face to face with me.
"Why aren't you with everyone in the living room?" He spoke quietly.
"I was getting my present for my mom."
"Do you know who I am?"
I looked him over carefully. There wasn't any mistaking the crinkled brown eyes staring back at me.
"Dad?"
He nodded, "Yes."
"You're Santa?"
His head lifted and a glitter twinkled in his eyes.
"Yes I am."
"Does anyone else know?"
"Just you and me."
"Why don't we live at the north-pole?"
His brow furrowed for a long moment and then it lifted, "Schools. The schools are better here."
Since I went to a private Catholic school, it seemed reasonable. After all, when I brought home less than stellar grades, my parents reminded me about the tuition they paid for me to attend and how blessed I should feel at the opportunity they gave me.
He promised we'd talk tomorrow and jogged away into the night. That was many years ago and I still believe as I did then. I'm Santa's daughter and we didn't live at the north-pole so I could attend my wonderful school. Over the years, I've helped the jolly old man with his Christmas clothes and bells. It always excited me. I even saved the newspaper article of Santa being pulled over in our pickup truck for speeding. There wasn't enough snow that year for the sleigh:)
My Santa dad has given of himself many times over his life. Each year he gave part of his Christmas to make a large handful of families happier. He donned his outfit to accompany children on  make a wish helicopter rides. Special needs children lit up when he knelt next to them or picked them up from their bed or chair to sit on his lap. Foster kids of all ages whispered their wishes for a family in his ear. I could go on but you see what he has contributed to the season.
I think Santa is pretty special.
Lots of Love
